the art of being grateful
When stress is getting to you and you're balancing a whole bunch of things at once - it can be difficult to centre yourself.
Practicing gratefulness allows you to be present and make the right decisions - kind of like taking a deep breath before you start something. It allows you to look at things from a positive perspective, helps your respond rather than react, and allows you to figure out what is the best course of action at each time.
During this time of exams, last-push for approves, EB elections, and more - take time to be grateful for the people and environment surrounding you.
What are you grateful for today?

We've now crossed over 500 Applicants this semester, congratulations all on your hard work! Imagine if you were applying for a Christmas casual job in November - you'd be pretty desperate for that job right, or you wouldn't be applying! The same logic applies to our EPs - those who are applying now for summer are really keen to get matched, so make sure you follow through and get them Approved quickly! And congratulations on those Approves over the last week, keep it up!
oGT/E:
Amazing job on the Approves guys, we're again in the 'growth from last year' side of the table which makes me excited! The same logic as above applies - those who apply now for summer want to go desperately, so do your job and follow through. Don't forget to prepare your EPs adequately for the challenges they'll face that are specific to oGT/E - they might need some technical knowledge on things like the business model canvas and customer empathy map depending on their work placements, so make sure to prepare them!
iGT:
We keep growing in Opens, congratulations to Melbourne achieve 1 Open this week. Remember to push our approves, at the end those are the first step to have our EPs working and developing in Australia. Re-setting expectations with our enablers about the time that the selection process should take may give more importance to this process, also is our responsibility to give a constant amount of profiles to them and keep them interested in the process.

Thank you Claudia from UQ for your awesome GCPs!
Previously, I never saw IXP as a potential EP market. However, upon hearing of Kyuree Choi's success in sem 1, I started to really think about what an AIESEC UQ with many oGIP IXP EPs would look like, and I realized that it meant continuity of the oGIP legacy I hope to leave behind. That is why in semester 2, I made IXP the second market we would focus on. From playing “games” in LCM that were secretly collecting information regarding what types of internships our LC were interested in to following up on those results and suggesting suitable opportunities, to continuously talking about oGIP and the change this program can create to anyone who would give me the time of day, we have come a really long way from the days when everyone in the LC had no idea what we actually do. I’m so proud to say that the efforts are paying off, because this semester, we have managed to approve 2 IXP EPs who will be going on exchange this summer. For the first time ever, IXP oGIP EPs are members and PMs (what we call TLs at UQ) rather than EB (although hopefully they will become EB soon!), and can bring back the learnings from their exchange to better improve the internship program in 2017. |

“I would rather walk with a friend in the dark, than alone in the light.” -Helen Keller
This is the quote I ended oGIP’s last portfolio meeting on this semester. At the beginning of this semester, I felt so demotivated by my role as VP oGIP and I was honestly quite upset that despite our successes in semester 1, I did not have enough pipeline for a second PM (what we call TLs at UQ). Because I never trusted my team fully in semester 1, I was holding my members and PMs up to impossible standards, and when I talked to those who were interested in the role about why they weren’t running, I would constantly hear “I don’t think I’m good enough, yet.” I didn’t realize that it was me rather than the team that needed to change until the weekend before semester 2 was about to begin. That was when I reached out to my PM, @Nicole, and we met up in the city, going from the Coffee Club to a sushi place and other locations I can’t remember for almost 8 hours just planning the coming semester. And for the first time, the semester plans included a leadership development plan. This semester, we regulated portfolio meetings, included LEAD sessions in all of them, and made IMs a focus in oGIP. This was extremely helpful as we were able to catch problems before they occurred, and could tailor team meeting content towards what the members in each individual team actually wanted to gain from AIESEC. When EB elections opened, I was so proud to see 7 out of my 11 members nominated to be on the EB of UQ. It means the world to me that the LC trusts in these amazing individuals’ abilities to lead the LC in 2017, and I am so incredibly proud of the 4 people who accepted their nominations. And to those who expressed interest in becoming a PM, I wish you all the best with your management board applications! Every single one of you have made this year and this semester so special for me and when I look back on this year of my life, it is you as the people who I will remember. Don’t be afraid to go for what you want, because if you let fear consume you, then your dreams will never come true. And remember… do what you love |
Because we aim to be a customer centric oGIP team, I have ensured that all OPS conducted for EPs is on an individual, one to one basis (unless they have requested otherwise, i.e. if two EPs are going to the same LC on the same internship). This means more efficiency in terms of time and duration, and we can tailor OPS content to the EP’s destination country and internship experience.
It ensures 100% OPS attendance, and allows us to help the EP establish goals they want to achieve during their exchange. Because it is an EPM to EP session, the bond between the service provider and the EP is a lot stronger, and trust is formed prior to departing Australia, so that transparency exists between the EPM and the EP. The only concern that I have seen raised about iOPS is the fact that EPs do not get to meet one another. However, EP get-togethers are an easy fix to the problem. All in all, I am incredibly proud to have a team that does not mind putting in a little more effort to deliver a well prepared life-changing experience to our valued customers. |
Cool example from USYD's oGC Team (thanks Daniel Chong!) on how we can continue to be customer-centric even through exam period. We have EPs realising now and heading off for their exchange - you worked so hard to get them approved this semester, don't forget about them now!
Send me the cool VD stuff you're doing to get showcased next week! -Josh
